Private Group Tours

The beautiful mountaintop setting and extraordinary history of Mount Wilson Observatory provide the backdrop for a truly memorable group experience. Whether your group is interested in astronomy, science, engineering, history, or simply exploring one of Southern California’s most remarkable landmarks, a private tour offers an in-depth look at the Observatory and its legacy of discovery.

Mount Wilson Institute docent and telescope operator, Nik Arkimovich, gives a special tour to staff visiting from Palomar Observatory.

What Do Private Tours Include?

A typical private tour includes a guided walk around the Observatory grounds (approximately two hours or more), a presentation on the history of Mount Wilson Observatory, and visits to the major telescopes including close-up looks at the instruments with descriptions of their operation and of the amazing discoveries made with each.

Private tours are offered during daytime hours only and do not include telescope observing. However, private tours may be added to a reserved nighttime observing session on either the 60-inch or 100-inch telescope. Please visit our Observing page for information about booking a telescope reservation.

Spanish-Language Tours

Private tours may be conducted in either English or Spanish, subject to guide availability. Please indicate your language preference when making your reservation request.

When Can Private Tours Take Place?

Private tours can generally be scheduled throughout the year, excluding major holidays. Advance notice is required to allow time for scheduling guides and coordinating your visit.
