Sunday Afternoon Concerts in the Dome: October 6, 2024

Date: October 6, 2024

Time: All Day

Artistic Director Cécilia Tsan curates thoughtful musical adventures
under the magnificent vaulted dome of the 100-inch telescope.

The 100-inch telescope is the instrument with which astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered our place in an expanding universe and so expanded our comprehension. The dome for the telescope—designed by Chicago architect D.H. Burnham—is a 20th century temple to science whose acoustics rival the great cathedrals of Europe and provides a unique setting for this ambitious music series.

Trio Dinicu (Cabaret Tzigane): Luanne Homzy (violin), Alfonso Ponticelli (guitar) and Felix Kochendörfer (double bass).

Hailed as “dazzling” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Trio Dinicu combines the forces of three highly distinguished musicians. Highly regarded for their creativity, Trio Dinicu blends acrobatic technique with the improvisatory language of jazz and the richness of Eastern European folk, including Classical Hungarian Gypsy Music, Romanian Lăutărească music, Russian romances, and French “Jazz Hot”.  Paying homage to the golden age of the Parisian-Russian cabaret, the Trio is named after the Romanian virtuoso violinist and composer Grigoras Ionica Dinicu, who influenced the one and only Jascha Heifetz and who was admired by Stéphane Grappelli, the world’s most famous jazz violinist.

A reception will be held outside the dome at 4 PM. Light refreshments will be served.

PLEASE NOTE: Access to the dome performance level is via a 53-step staircase. Mount Wilson Observatory is a mile high in elevation so the air is noticeably thinner. There is no ADA-compliant access.
