Mount Wilson Observatory Docent Training
Join a dedicated community and expand your understanding of this historic treasure! Our docents provide weekend guided tours of our campus and its telescopes, leading and educating a diverse audience about the wonders of the cosmos and how Mount Wilson Observatory was integral in shaping modern astronomy.
Docent volunteers are vital to the public outreach programs at Mount Wilson Observatory. No in-depth knowledge of astronomy is required, and all the necessary training is provided. We are looking for enthusiastic communicators who want to tell the wonderful story of Mount Wilson’s scientific heritage. Our docents can also lead STEM programs for children in grades 5 – 12. These opportunities are usually available during the week.
Docent Qualifications:
Must be 18 years of age
Committed to volunteering at least 40 hours per year
Able to manage a group with a friendly and professional manner
Ability to work at an elevation of over 5700 feet, walk for two hours (~1 mile), including climbing stairways and walking up and down moderate slopes
Docent Requirements:
Complete our docent training program that takes place once a year in March. The first segment takes place in Pasadena, while the remaining takes place on our mountain campus.
Complete a sexual harassment training
Attend our safety protocol and public policy meeting
Live Scan background check (STEM docents only)
